Building Europe’s first education unicorn - Laura Warnier - GoStudent
Laura Warnier spent the last 15 years abroad before moving back to Belgium this summer. In the meantime, she experienced one of the wildest tech adventures ever shared on this podcast.
In 2018, she joined GoStudent in Vienna as their second employee. Three years later, the small startup became Europe’s first EdTech unicorn, before having to restructure rapidly following the downturn in the financial markets in 2022.
In this episode, Laura takes us behind the scenes of a unicorn’s meteoric growth, seen from the inside by one of its very first employees. She shares the moments of euphoria and the personal challenges that come with such an ascension.
Her story begins at HelloFresh and Rocket Internet in Berlin, where she accidentally discovered the entrepreneurial tech world. Next stop: Google in Dublin, where she learned the ins and outs of sales and digital marketing. Then comes the leap into the unknown: leaving the “golden cage” to move to Austria and, a few years later, join a startup located in the basement of a sailing school.
We break down how GoStudent built its sales engine, convincing parents who swore only by in-person tutoring to switch to online classes.
Then came Covid, Series A, and international expansion at a pace few European startups have ever experienced. France, Spain, Italy, then the rest of Europe, before setting sights on America. Laura shares the methods behind this international expansion: an 80-page playbook, a highly centralized organization, and an obsession with execution.
And then there is the side people talk about less. Seeing more experienced profiles brought in above the teams you built yourself. Watching the market turn upside down overnight and having to rethink an entire growth strategy. Learning to balance numbers with people.
Laura reflects on what she learned from this adventure, as well as what came after. Moving from her role as Chief Growth Officer of a unicorn she helped build from scratch—from its brand and culture to its growth engine—to having to redefine who she is outside of that adventure.
After leaving, she took an extended break, during which she read almost a book a day all winter long, to step back and figure out her next move.
Today, while waiting to find her next entrepreneurial adventure, she advises startups and scale-ups on their growth challenges, from sales to marketing and international development. Anything related to revenue growth, she tackles.

Hi and welcome to Donne le Rythme, the podcast about Belgian entrepreneurship.
I am Thimothée Remy, a professional coach, and I support those who want to start as a freelancer or move forward more serenely in their entrepreneurial project.
With this podcast, I create a space to get to the heart of the subjects. Through my episodes, you will discover the journeys, the successes but also the struggles of my guests. And above all, you will understand how they actually launched their business.
Over the course of the conversations, they really open up, without filter. In any case, that's still my goal!
Belgium is full of entrepreneurs, inspiring talents that I can't wait to introduce to you.
Thank you for listening and all you have to do is set the pace!
