Data science & Interactive tools developer - Climate Vulnerability

Internship

Job description

Your mission

What if your data analyses became educational tools used in several European countries?

As part of the European TRACE project, we are looking for someone interested in quantitative research, programming, and digital tool development to help create two interactive educational tools that will be accessible free of charge:

  • A climate vulnerability calculator, enabling users to understand and compare the factors that make certain countries more vulnerable than others to climate risks.

  • An interactive library of climate solutions, allowing exploration of various climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies around the world.

The goal? Finalizing these two tools for rollout in April 2027, accompanied by educational workshops organized in Belgium and the project's five other partner countries.

These tools will be made available to teachers so they can use them freely in their classes and raise awareness among their students about vulnerability and climate justice issues.

You will therefore contribute to a concrete project combining scientific research, data analysis, programming, web design, and pedagogy, with a genuine European-scale perspective.

Internship responsibilities

Scientific research and data analysis

  • Research, select, and analyze indicators to measure climate vulnerability: risk exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity, and economic, social, and environmental factors.

  • Collect, clean, and structure data from scientific and institutional sources (World Bank, World Risk Index, etc.).

  • Develop and test the calculator's quantitative methodology, notably formulas, indicator weighting, and interpretation.

  • Compare the climate vulnerabilities of different countries and contribute to the creation of accessible country profiles.

Development of an interactive climate vulnerability calculator

  • Participate in the design and programming of an online educational calculator.

  • Translate scientific methodology into a tool that explores and compares climate vulnerability factors.

  • Develop charts, maps, and interactive visualizations to facilitate the understanding of results.

  • Contribute to web design and user experience to make the tool intuitive and accessible for students and teachers.

  • Participate in testing, improvements, and finalization of the calculator ahead of its European rollout in April 2027.

Creation of an interactive climate solutions library

  • Research and identify climate change adaptation and mitigation solutions used worldwide.

  • Structure a database to categorize solutions by climate risks, geographical contexts, and conditions for implementation.

  • Contribute to the programming and design of an interactive platform for searching, filtering, and comparing different solutions.

  • Develop a simple, educational interface enabling teachers and students to explore existing solutions.

  • Participate in finalizing an open-access library intended to become an educational resource usable beyond the TRACE project.

Testing, pedagogy, and European rollout

  • Participate in creating educational materials and activities using both digital tools.

  • Contribute to their adaptation for students aged 15 and over.

  • Test the tools with users and integrate their feedback to improve accessibility and usability.

  • Participate in preparing the educational workshops scheduled for April 2027 across the six project countries.

  • Analyze participant feedback and contribute to evaluating the educational impact of the tools.

Profile

  • Studies in data science, computer science, economics, geography, environmental sciences, engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong skills in quantitative analysis and data processing.

  • Knowledge of programming (Python, R, JavaScript, or similar technologies).

  • Skills or initial experience in web development, interactive interface creation, or web design.

  • Ability to develop data visualizations and translate complex results into understandable content.

  • Strong interest in climate issues, international inequalities, and pedagogy.

  • Methodological rigor, autonomy, creativity, and critical thinking.

  • Good proficiency in English.

Why apply?

An internship where you do more than just data analysis: you help build tools that will actually be used!

At Sumatra Innovation, your work won't just sit in an Excel file, a Python script, or a scientific report. You will participate in creating and launching two interactive tools that will then be used across several European countries.

This internship notably offers:

  • Two concrete digital projects to develop: contributing to the design, programming, and finalization of a climate calculator and an interactive library.

  • A European rollout starting in April 2027: seeing the tools you helped build used in educational workshops organized in six countries.

  • An impact beyond the internship: developing free, accessible tools that teachers can continue to use with their students.

  • A multidisciplinary experience: combining data science, scientific research, programming, web design, data visualization, and pedagogy.

  • Real responsibilities: proposing features, contributing to methodological and technical decisions, testing your ideas, and actively participating in tool development.

  • A European experience: working on an EU-funded project in collaboration with international partners.

  • A small team where your ideas matter: receiving guidance while having the necessary autonomy to take initiatives and shape the project.

The goal: by the end of your internship, you will be able to showcase two digital tools you directly contributed to, which are online and deployed at a European scale.

Conduct of interviews

The recruitment process takes place in two stages: a first online interview to discuss your background, motivations and expectations, followed by a second in-person interview to delve deeper and discover Sumatra Innovation more concretely.

Diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities are important to us. Applicants are therefore selected on the basis of their qualities and skills, without distinction as to age, religion, origin, disability, sex or gender.
If you have a disability, learning difficulty or illness and would like to benefit from reasonable accommodation as part of the selection procedure, please mention this on your application. Just say so in your application. The conditions will be adapted as best we can so that you can apply in the best possible circumstances.
