Internship in bioremediation with a focus on hydrocarbon-contaminated soils
Job description
⚠️ Please note: during the summer period, please send your application directly to bioremediation.intern@novobiom.com rather than via the platform.
In this internship, you will be responsible for supporting Novobiom's bioremediation engineers in the development and testing of innovative biological strategies for the remediation of soils contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons.
You will work closely with the bioremediation research engineers, the bioremediation team, and the production team (culture and supply of bacteria and fungi), to design and conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate different biological approaches: mycoremediation, bacterial biodegradation, and combined fungus-bacteria systems.
Key Responsibilities
Design anaerobic bioremediation strategies adapted to samples of contaminated fine soils.
Design and perform laboratory experiments at batch and column scale, under controlled anaerobic conditions.
To test different biological approaches: fungal, bacterial, combined fungi-bacteria, and biostimulation by nutrients.
Monitor hydrocarbon degradation (TPH/GC analysis), nutrients, redox conditions, and other anaerobic biodegradation parameters, and functional genes.
Analyze experimental results and contribute to the development and optimization of the technology.
Daily activities
Laboratory work
Setting up and monitoring batch and column experiments in anaerobic conditions.
Basic physicochemical analyses (pH, ORP, TPH/GC).
Biological monitoring of fungal and bacterial cultures.
Data analysis and interpretation
Processing degradation data from experiments.
Contribution to the feeding of a numerical model of TPH biodegradation, in connection with laboratory results.
Cross-functional collaboration
Regular exchanges with the research, production and engineering teams.
Participation in discussions on the optimization of the tested strategies.
Profile
Education: BSc or MSc student in Environmental Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Soil Science, or Chemical Engineering/Bioprocesses.
Technical Skills and Experience:
Strong interest in bioremediation and environmental sustainability.
Basic laboratory skills.
An analytical mind.
Experience in microbiology, working with fungi, or GC analysis is a plus.
An interest in nature-based solutions is appreciated.
Enterprising spirit: Comfort with the startup culture and ability to thrive in a dynamic, often ambiguous environment. Our processes are still under construction — and that's part of the fun. If you like to roll up your sleeves, discover as you go, take responsibility for inventing, solidifying and developing solutions at your level, you will feel right at home here. This role requires the ability to work independently and move forward even when all the pieces are not in place. We are looking for someone who can focus on what matters most, with a collaborative and positive mindset.
Passion for Mission: If you are the ideal candidate, your motivation should come from the urgency of restoring our planet. Your role goes beyond just a job; It is a commitment to be part of a team that builds and implements the best solutions for a sustainable future.
Communication and collaboration:
Able to communicate accurately and effectively, both orally and in writing
Excellent team player, able to collaborate with colleagues and partners with diverse skills and experience (including profiles in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, technology, administration and management).
Fluency in English and French, both oral and written, is required to communicate effectively with team members, customers and partners.
