Bioremediation Engineering Internship
Job description
In this internship, you will be responsible for supporting the project engineers in the day-to-day delivery of our innovative bioremediation solutions, conducting additional research where necessary to support our impact.
Our bioremediation approaches combine the exploitation of metabolic digital twin bioremediation models with tailored fungal-based field remediation approaches - with a specific focus on the degradation of persistent and emerging contaminants in soils, industrial water, and sludges.
You will work in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to address complex environmental challenges and optimize bioremediation processes, with rigorous scientific approaches.
Main responsibilities
Participate in the initial design of bioremediation projects adapted to the unique characteristics of specific soils, industrial water, and sludges.
Lead the day-to-day implementation of bioremediation projects, including coordinating contributions from other team members (e.g., colleagues from lab & production and computational biology units).
Help develop protocols, collect and analyse samples to define the most appropriate bioremediation approach.
Monitor data from bioremediation processes to evaluate their effectiveness. Work with our project director to make necessary adjustments to optimize performance while respecting environmental standards.
Maintain records of experiments, field evaluations, and project results.
Daily activities
Technical Engineering & IoT
Setting up and assembling experimental soil columns.
Installing IoT monitoring systems (sensors for T, CO2, O2) to track ongoing physico-chemical parameters.
Tidying and sorting of the hall and soil storage zones.
Laboratory Analysis
Conducting basic physico-chemical measurements on various matrices (soil, sludge, water), including pH, redox potential, and Dry Matter (%DM).
Biological monitoring of fungal liquid fermentation cultures (preparation and testing).
Fieldwork & Data Management
Assisting in soil sampling field trips across key sites (e.g., Libramont, Herstal, Hensies).
Processing and interpreting data from experimental results and samples.
Operational Support & HSE
Supporting HSE management through product inventory, equipment maintenance, and enforcement of safety rules.
Business automation: coding Excel formulas to improve data processing workflows.
Assisting with overall office management, including household and chemical waste protocols.
Profile
Education: Master's Degree student in Bioscience Engineering (biotechnologies or environment), or a related field.
Technical skills and professional experience:
Know-how in environmental microbiology and bioremediation techniques.
Proficiency in environmental data analysis and the use of laboratory analytical tools.
Ideally, early experience in the design and implementation of bioremediation systems.
Good knowledge of the remediation industry, legislative frameworks, remediation project implementation, and management.
Enterprising spirit: Comfort with startup culture and ability to thrive in a dynamic, often ambiguous environment. Our processes are still being built — and that is part of the fun. If you enjoy rolling up your sleeves, figuring things out as you go, taking ownership for inventing, solidifying, and scaling up solutions at your level, you will feel right at home here. This role requires the ability to work independently and move forward even when not all the pieces are in place. We are looking for someone who can focus on what matters most, with a collaborative and positive mindset.
Passion for the mission: If you are the ideal candidate, your motivation should stem from the urgent need to restore our planet. Your role goes beyond a job; it is a commitment to be a part of a team that builds and implements the best solutions for a sustainable future.
Communication and collaboration:
Able to communicate precisely and effectively, in oral and written
Great team player, able to collaborate with colleagues and partners with diverse skills and experience (including biology, chemistry, computing, engineering, tech, admin, and management profiles).
Fluency/ proficiency in English and French both oral and written is required to effectively communicate with team members, clients, and partners.
Why apply?
High-impact and innovative work: Be part of a fast-growing, well-funded, start-up company that has a significant environmental impact through innovation and a passion for nature. You will contribute directly to cutting-edge mycotechnologies.
Culture of Collaboration and Support: Thrive in a caring and fast-paced environment where your contributions have a huge impact. You will learn from experienced professionals and become an integral part of our mission. ✨
Real-world experience: Gain invaluable hands-on experience in a dynamic lab setting, working on real-world projects that contribute to a sustainable future.
Networking opportunities: Connect with professionals in the biotechnology and environmental industries. 🤝
