OTO
Project description
What if the problem wasn't the bike itself, but all the bikes that exist today? 🚲
This is the observation made by Raphaël, a general practitioner from Brussels, while observing his patients and the streets of his city. Active mobility is a matter of course for public health. But city dwellers who would like to switch to cycling, commuters, women, people with an average budget, still don't have a solution that really suits them. Too heavy, too big, too restrictive, too expensive to maintain.
Winner of Be Circular 2022, OTO responds to this void with a folding bike designed for the real city: light, compact, clean, maintenance-free, which rides like a grown-up and fits into any daily life. ✨
But OTO is also a unique technology. After 10 years of R&D, the project resulted in a 3D printed stainless steel sleeved frame, bonded to carbon tubes. Zero welding. An approach that allows production to be entirely relocated to Brussels, on demand, without dormant stocks. 🏭
Today: a working prototype, a waiting list of 900 prospects, and a crucial next step to take, the MVP and the pre-series, driven by a business model based on Long-Term Leasing (LTR) and refurbishment. A bike that is not sold, but that can be used, repaired and passed on. 🔄
Searched profile
I'm looking for a partner, not an employee. Someone with whom to move forward on all fronts on a daily basis, without compartmentalization, without ego, with the desire to build something meaningful. 🤝
At OTO, that means being able to go from the workbench to the Excel spreadsheet in the same day. Adjusting components in the morning, analysing a long-term lease contract in the afternoon, responding to a prospect in the evening. That's the reality of a project under construction.
👀 The "hands in the dirt" profile:
A person with the following qualities:
Mechanics & Production: concrete experience in bike mechanics, the desire to assemble and optimize a pre-series without it scaring you.
Management & LLD: you understand the workings of Long-Term Leasing, it's the heart of our business model, you have to be able to structure it and make it work.
Digitalization: comfortable with digital tools to structure fleet management and user experience.
Culture impact: the values of the non-profit sector speak to you, meaning, social utility, without sacrificing the efficiency of the private sector.
What we will build together: finalize the MVP, launch the pre-series, set up the production workshop in Brussels, manage our first prospects and embody a healthy and obvious mobility.💪
Why this project?
Joining OTO today means arriving at exactly the right time: the technology exists, the market is waiting, the structure remains to be built. And that's precisely where you come in. 🎯
You won't be employed. You will be a co-founder in your own right: capital, strategic decisions, corporate culture, all this is built together, from day one. What you build here is also yours.
The product you will work on is unique (3D stainless steel / carbon, zero welding, local production in Brussels), with 10 years of R&D behind it and 900 prospects waiting to be able to order. It's not an idea on a post-it. It's a technically proven project, and it needs you to take the next step.
The long-term lease model guarantees recurring revenue and a long-term relationship with users. We don't do a marketing stunt, we build something solid in the long term. And in concrete terms, each OTO bike on the road is one less car, a more active person, a slightly more breathable city. The impact is real, measurable, direct. 🌱
No vague hierarchy, no empty promises. Short circuit, honesty, pragmatism. Ready to get in the saddle? 🚀
Commitments to a sustainable world
At OTO, every design choice is a technical choice as much as a choice of values.
🔩 Zero obsolescence: Unlike the "disposable" bike industry, OTO uses noble and unalterable materials: stainless steel and carbon. The frame is designed to last 30 years and each part is standardized to be infinitely repairable. We fight against the waste of resources through engineering choices, not slogans.
🏭 Production relocated to Brussels: 3D printing of stainless steel junctions makes it possible to produce locally, on demand, without dormant stocks and without transatlantic transport. We create value and qualified technical employment in the heart of our city.
🔄 Circular economy: Thanks to the long-term lease model, OTO retains ownership of its bikes. This contractually commits us to providing an object that never breaks down. At the end of its life, each bike is reconditioned for a new user, thus closing the circular loop.
🩺 Public health: As a doctor, Raphaël's commitment is to remove the obstacles to physical practice. OTO is designed to be so clean and obvious that it becomes the first choice of travel, reducing noise, air and sedentary pollution for Brussels residents.
💬 Radical transparency: OTO rejects industrial bullshit. Costs, materials and value chain are designed to be shared with the community, because trust is the primary fuel for active mobility.
About the founder
Raphaël Panier
Cofounder
I am a general practitioner. Not an engineer, not an entrepreneur by training. 😄
But it is precisely my doctor's perspective that is at the origin of OTO. I am convinced that the health of our cities depends on active mobility, and that the best medicine against a sedentary lifestyle is a bicycle that is so safe, reliable and practical that we choose it not because of virtue, but because it is simply better than the alternatives.
I dedicated 10 years to taking up this challenge. Ten years of designing, testing, starting over, refusing easy compromises, until we ended up with a technology that really keeps its promises. The prototype is here. The prospects are there. What is missing now is someone to co-drive the rest with me.
I know what I know how to do: design, innovate, convince. I also know what I don't do as well: structure a solid organization and business model on my own. That's why I'm looking for a partner to turn this technical legacy into a collective, circular success story, and build a healthier city together, one pedal stroke at a time. 🚀
