Preventing burnout: learning to slow down before it's too late
Have you ever felt drained when you get home from work, without energy, without motivation, with this feeling of not really moving forward? 😞
If so, you're not alone. Burnout, or professional burnout, is affecting more and more employees. In Belgium, almost a third of workers say they have already felt the first signs of this. And often, we only realize it when the exhaustion becomes total: physically, emotionally and mentally!
But the good news is that it is possible to act before the situation escalates. Preventing burnout is above all about learning to listen to yourself better, to set your limits and to take care of yourself on a daily basis.
In this article, we explain how to spot the warning signs and adopt simple habits to keep your energy and pleasure at work.
Ready to take a deep breath? Here we go!
Listen to the signals your body is sending you
Do you feel tired first thing in the morning? Are you sleeping badly, losing motivation or having trouble concentrating? 😴
These are not simple "slumps", they are often warning signs. Take a moment to observe your energy levels as the days go by. If you're constantly feeling pressured, irritable, or out of breath, it's time to slow down.
👉 Tip: Rate your fatigue or stress level out of 10 every day. If the rating remains high for several days in a row, it is a sign that action is needed before it gets worse.
Set clear boundaries between your professional life and your personal life
Burnout often arises from a blurred line between work and the rest of life. If you check your emails at 10pm or "just finish a file" on Sunday, it might be time to take back control.
Establishes fixed (and strict!) disconnection schedules.
Turn off your work phone in the evening.
Really enjoy your breaks, without a screen.
Remember: you don't have to be available 24 hours a day. Your personal time is non-negotiable. The right to disconnect is not a privilege, it is a fundamental right : you have no obligation to remain reachable outside of your working hours. Respecting this right means protecting your balance, your mental health and your well-being. And it is precisely by recharging your batteries that you will be more effective at work. ⚡
Learn to say "no" (without feeling guilty)
You want to do well, you're doing everyone a favor... and in the end, you exhaust yourself. 😩
But knowing how to say no is essential to preserve your balance.
You don't have to accept everything, or carry all the weight of your team on your shoulders. Refusing an additional task does not make you someone "less invested", on the contrary, it is being lucid.
👉 Try this magic phrase:
"At the moment, I am already working on the development of the new project. I prefer not to commit myself to this task now so as not to rush the work."
Courteous, clear and 100% legitimate. 💪
Take breaks... and real breaks! ☕
No, a "break" where you stay in front of your computer doesn't count. 😅
Breaks are a powerful tool for preventing burnout. They recharge your brain, ease your stress and improve your concentration.
Try to give yourself 5 to 10 minutes every hour, or go outside for some fresh air between meetings. And above all, respect your lunch break: disconnect, walk a little and eat guilt-free.
Cultivate your balance outside of work
Work is important, but it's only a part of your life.
So, fill up on activities that recharge your batteries : sports, music, drawing, gardening, reading, cooking... It doesn't matter, as long as it makes you feel good. 💚
These moments nourish your self-esteem, help you decompress and remind you that you are not just about your job.
👉 The more you take care of your personal life, the more resilient you are in your professional life.
Seek support at the first signs
You don't have to wait until you're at the end of your rope to ask for help. The simple fact of talking about it is already a first step towards the prevention of burnout. 💬 Sometimes, we just need an outside perspective to put some order in the fog: an attentive ear, a space to put what we feel without judgment.
This is where coaching can make all the difference.
A coach helps you put words to what you are experiencing, identify the root causes of your stress and find concrete levers to act, at your own pace. Together, you will explore new avenues, give meaning to your work and start again on a good basis. ✨
In short: burnout is not inevitable
Preventing burnout means taking care of yourself before your body or mind sounds the alarm. By listening to your needs, setting boundaries and cultivating your balance, you put all the chances on your side to stay motivated, serene and fulfilled at work.
So breathe, slow down a little and remember: your health comes before your job. Always. 💚
