Burn-out and bore-out at work: is the hive sick?
Burn-out, bore-out: the hive is sick
When Guy Veny returns to hrmeetup.©, the starting point is quite simple, to resume the discussion a few years later.
At the time, we were already talking about transformation, governance, collective intelligence.
Since... A lot has been tested, and yet. Indicators related to stress, depression and work incapacity continue to improve.
According to the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization, 12 billion working days are lost each year due to these reasons.
In Europe, stress is considered a frequent reality by more than one in two workers (European Agency for Safety and Health at Work).
In Belgium, data from the NIHDI confirm a continuous increase in work-related mental disorders.
In the episode, we also point to bore-out, another form of exhaustion due to loss of meaning or disconnection (the person loses interest in his or her job).
And it changes the reading. Because it means that the problem is not limited to pressure, something also affects the place of the individual in the system.
At one point, an image stands out in the exchange: The beehive.
For a long time, we tried to act on the hive: management, structures, models.
But if the bees remain in difficulty... The hive follows.
This idea is not contradicted, it is even validated in the discussion.
And it comes at a particular time, at a time when tensions are accelerating : economic pressure, transformation of work, higher generational expectations.
At the same time, political decisions can reinforce these tensions rather than appease them, especially when they increase the pressure on individuals without necessarily addressing the systemic causes.
Nothing is simplified in this episode, no ready-made solution or miracle method, just an observation that remains open.
If the hive is not doing well... Are we looking in the right place?
To listen to, really... and let us know what you think!
