Each year, Earth Overshoot Day marks the moment when our consumption of renewable resources exceeds what the planet can regenerate over twelve months.
Yet behind this date lies a much more concrete question: what does it actually mean to live "on credit" using the planet's resources?

In this new episode of "6 Minutes to understand", the Midoricast column, Pierre Léonard breaks down what Overshoot Day measures, why the gaps between countries are sometimes staggering and what this pressure on resources can mean for a company.

Because it is not just about the environment:  raw materials, supply, mobility, dependence on critical resources: when physical limits draw closer, certain seemingly secondary decisions become strategic.

And taking action does not necessarily mean multiplying small gestures.
Pierre Léonard offers another way of looking at the problem : first identify what truly weighs in the balance, so you can choose where to act.

Key questions from this episode

What does Overshoot Day actually measure?
Pierre Léonard explains it as the moment when the human ecological footprint exceeds the biocapacity available for the year: in other words, when the demand for renewable resources and absorption capacity becomes greater than what the planet can regenerate over twelve months.

Where does Belgium stand regarding Overshoot Day?
To Michel Godart's question about Belgium's position, Pierre Léonard indicates in the episode that its overshoot day falls on April 11 and explains that if all humanity lived like Belgians, it would take more than four planets.

Can we stay within planetary boundaries while maintaining a good standard of living?
Pierre Léonard presents this question as one of the central challenges. He cites Ecuador and Costa Rica as examples providing, in his view, an encouraging starting answer: proper human development combined with a footprint remaining close to their national biocapacity.

Where can a company start to take action?
Pierre Léonard recommends starting by measuring: raw materials used, waste produced and dependence on critical resources. He then suggests identifying the items that truly weigh on the activity, notably procurement and travel, rather than sticking to essentially symbolic gestures.

What should be prioritized at home?
Pierre Léonard applies the same logic on an individual scale: looking primarily at the items that carry the most weight — food, mobility, housing or consumption of single-use items — rather than focusing all attention on gestures whose effect remains limited in order of magnitude.
