Bioremediation Engineering Internship
Job description
⚠️ Please note: during the summer period, please send your application directly to bioremediation.intern@novobiom.com rather than via the platform.
In this internship, you will be responsible for supporting project engineers in the day-to-day delivery of our innovative bioremediation solutions, conducting additional research when needed to support our impact.
Our bioremediation approaches combine the exploitation of metabolic digital twin bioremediation models with adapted mushroom-based field remediation approaches – with a particular focus on the degradation of persistent and emerging contaminants in soils, industrial water and sludge.
You will work in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to address complex environmental challenges and optimize bioremediation processes, with rigorous scientific approaches.
Key Responsibilities
Participate in the initial design of bioremediation projects tailored to the unique characteristics of specific soils, industrial waters, and sludge.
Lead the day-to-day implementation of bioremediation projects, including coordinating inputs from other team members (e.g., colleagues from the laboratory and production and computational biology units).
Assist in the development of protocols, collect and analyze samples in order to define the most appropriate bioremediation approach.
Monitor data from bioremediation processes to assess their effectiveness. Work with our project manager to make the necessary adjustments to optimize performance while respecting environmental standards.
Maintain records of experiences, field evaluations and project results.
Daily activities
Technical Engineering and IoT
Install and assemble experimental floor columns.
Installation of IoT monitoring systems (sensors for T, CO2, O2) to monitor ongoing physico-chemical parameters.
Tidy up and sort the room and soil storage areas.
Laboratory analysis
Performing basic physicochemical measurements on various matrices (soil, mud, water), including pH, ORP and dry matter ( %DM).
Biological monitoring of fungal liquid fermentation cultures (preparation and testing).
Fieldwork and data management
Assistance during soil sampling outings at key sites (e.g. Libramont, Herstal, Hensies).
Processing and interpretation of data from experimental results and samples.
Operational Support & HSE
Support HSE management through product inventory, equipment maintenance and safety enforcement.
Business automation: coding Excel formulas to improve data processing workflows.
Assistance with the overall management of the office, including protocols related to household and chemical waste.
Profile
Education: Master's student in bioscience engineering (biotechnology or environment), or a related field.
Technical skills and professional experience:
Know-how in environmental microbiology and bioremediation techniques.
Mastery of environmental data analysis and use of laboratory analytical tools.
Ideally, early experience in the design and implementation of bioremediation systems.
Good knowledge of the remediation industry, legislative frameworks, implementation of remediation projects and management.
Enterprising spirit: Comfort with the startup culture and ability to thrive in a dynamic, often ambiguous environment. Our processes are still under construction — and that's part of the fun. If you like to roll up your sleeves, discover as you go, take responsibility for inventing, solidifying and developing solutions at your level, you will feel right at home here. This role requires the ability to work independently and move forward even when all the pieces are not in place. We are looking for someone who can focus on what matters most, with a collaborative and positive mindset.
Passion for Mission: If you are the ideal candidate, your motivation should come from the urgency of restoring our planet. Your role goes beyond just a job; It is a commitment to be part of a team that builds and implements the best solutions for a sustainable future.
Communication and collaboration:
Able to communicate accurately and effectively, both orally and in writing
Excellent team player, able to collaborate with colleagues and partners with diverse skills and experience (including profiles in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, technology, administration and management).
Fluency in English and French, both oral and written, is required to communicate effectively with team members, customers and partners.
⚠️ Please note: during the summer period, please send your application directly to bioremediation.intern@novobiom.com rather than via the platform.
Why apply?
